Patagonia Penguins Make a Comeback
It looks like good times for the penguins of Patagonia. Magellanic penguins living along the coast of Argentina have suffered two disastrous breeding seasons, but this year the beaches are filled with fat adults and numerous chicks. Dee Boersma, a conservation biologist at the University of Washington, is following and tracking penguins on the beaches of Argentina.

Prevent Long Line Fishing in the Galapagos!
The Galapagos Islands, renowned throughout the world for their unique biodiversity, are threatened by a proposal to open protected waters to long-lining, a method of fishing usually associated with high levels of bycatch and high pressure on fish stocks.
The Marine Reserve is home to a high proportion of species that occur nowhere else on earth. Long-lining could be devastating. Given the high numbers of sharks, rays, turtles, sea birds, and sea lions it is inevitable that the bycatch of these animals will be extremely high and will impact populations which are threatened or endangered.

New Hope for Endangered African Penguins
Conservationists Welcome Clean-up Reimbursement, Rebounding Species:
Conservation groups today welcomed the final reimbursement of expenses incurred in emergency relief efforts following a major oil spill off Cape Town, South Africa last year....
....By the time the last penguin was release on 18 October 2000, the response to the MV Treasure spill has been deemed the most successful oiled bird rehabilitation effort ever, with a mortality rate of just over 10%. Despite the loss of more than 2,000 penguins in the spill, a recent count revealed breeding pairs on Robben Island have increased 20% from 5,700 to 6,700 over the past 12 months.
